Shipshape is not an aesthetic. It is a standard. A clean boat is not necessarily a shipshape boat. Some of the cleanest boats in any marina are the least maintained — cosmetically polished while the systems beneath the surface deteriorate unattended.
A shipshape vessel is understandable. The owner knows how it works. Every system, every seacock, every circuit. They know the boat. It is maintainable. The layout allows access. The systems are serviceable. The owner has the knowledge and tools to maintain it.
It is insurable. It passes a reasonable survey. It is usable — not just admired at the dock, but actually operated. And it is mission-appropriate. The vessel matches what the owner is actually trying to do. Holding yourself and your vessel to this standard is what Shipshape Society is about.
