The Problem
The real problem is doing this alone.
Without the right guidance, it is easy to chase the wrong boat, miss the expensive problems, and make a purchase that drains your money, steals your time, and kills the dream before it ever leaves the dock.
- ✕Too many listings, not enough real information
- ✕Polished photos hide deferred maintenance and expensive systems
- ✕Cheap boats get expensive fast
- ✕A bad boat looks great until you know what to look for
- ✕The survey is not step one — you should know before you pay for one
- ✕The wrong boat drains your money, time, momentum — leaving you stuck at the dock
Buy with evidence.
Own with confidence.
The goal is not just buying a boat. The goal is buying the right boat.
Shipshape Buying Process
01
Define Your Goals
We start with the Shipshape Questionnaire — it captures your mission, budget, location, skill level, timeline, cruising goals, and ownership tolerance, so the entire search is built around the right boat for you.
02
Identify Suitable Boats
We help you learn what kinds of boats actually fit your mission — and which to rule out — instead of chasing every attractive listing.
03
Search Together
You and your consultant build your candidate list together. You learn to spot the good ones as we go, and matched candidate recommendations are sent to you continuously.
04
Inspect Promising Boats Virtually
Every serious candidate gets a detailed virtual pre-purchase inspection over video — so obvious problems surface before you spend money on travel or a survey.
05
Estimate Repairs & Ownership Costs
We walk through likely repair exposure and real ownership costs together, so you understand what a boat will actually cost beyond its price.
06
Decide If It's Worth Seeing
With the facts in front of you, you decide whether a boat earns the time and expense of an in-person look.
07
Prepare for the Survey
When a boat is worth pursuing, we help you prepare for a formal in-person survey and sea trial by a credentialed surveyor.
08
Interpret Findings & Offer Strategy
We help you interpret the survey findings and think through your own offer strategy — grounded in condition, market reality, and repair exposure. You decide, and you submit every offer yourself.

An Education Program First
Most consultants find you a boat and hand you the keys. This program hands you the skill.
Most boat buying help is just a service. Someone else does the work, you write the check, and when it's over you know exactly as much as you did on day one. That's not this.
This is an education program first. Every listing reviewed together, every video walkthrough, every inspection — all of it is teaching. You're not watching from the sidelines while a surveyor works. You're being shown what your consultant is looking at, why it matters, and what it costs when it's wrong. Spend a search looking at boats that way and something clicks. By the time the right one surfaces, you've seen dozens of wrong ones — and you know precisely why they were wrong.
The Shipshape Boat Buyer Research & Education Handbook is where the entire system lives — 75 dense, no-fluff pages built from hundreds of boats. Not a summary of the program. The program, written down: every method, every checklist, every hard-won lesson your consultant uses, handed to you in full.
At Shipshape Society, the goal is to create more confident mariners through understanding. You don't just walk away with the right boat. You walk away as someone who could go find it again alone.
What You Gain
More than help buying a boat — the knowledge to evaluate any vessel and the preparation to actually own one.
Learn to Read a Boat
Know exactly what to inspect, what to look for, and what the red flags really mean — so you can evaluate any vessel with confidence.
Understand the Systems
Build real working knowledge of the engine, electrical, and structural systems that make or break a boat.
Decide With Evidence
Learn to weigh condition, cost exposure, and leverage so every decision is grounded in reality — not emotion.
Ready for Ownership
Walk away prepared to own, maintain, and operate your vessel with confidence — not just buy it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a brokerage service?
No. This is an education and advisory program, not a brokerage or dealership. We don't list or sell boats, we don't represent buyers or sellers in a transaction, and we never submit or accept offers on your behalf — you make and submit every offer and every decision yourself.
What we actually do is search for boats together, teach you how to evaluate and inspect any vessel yourself, and perform professional pre-purchase inspections alongside you so you learn what to look for. You're paying for that education and guidance — a fee you pay directly to us. It is never a commission, is never tied to a sale price, and is never paid by or shared with a seller, broker, or dealer.
How long does the program last?
There's no fixed timeline — you have unlimited education and support from your first search to final closing, however long that takes. Some members close in a month, others take six months, a year, or longer. It just depends on your timeline. Finding the right boat takes dedication and patience — the right boat is out there, but a large percentage of listings have serious issues, and finding a good one takes real time. Your consultant is with you every step of the way, always with your best interest in mind.
This is a learning program above everything else. Between viewings alongside your consultant, your handbook, and your sessions together, you'll absorb so much along the way that by the end, you'll be able to spot the same red flags they do. It's a great feeling seeing a soon-to-be owner who's toured 50 boats start sending over listings like a pro — because the program doesn't just find you a boat, it teaches you how to evaluate one yourself.
How do I communicate with my consultant during the program?
The program includes unlimited scheduled meetings with your consultant throughout the buying process. You can book time on his calendar as needed for listing reviews, vessel comparisons, inspection discussions, survey findings, offer strategy, negotiation support, and closing guidance.
Support continues until the right vessel is found and the purchase is complete — but that is only the beginning. Once you become an owner, Shipshape Society remains a resource for the rest of your ownership journey and beyond.
After going through the buying process with the Society, you are not simply handed the keys and left on your own. You become part of a community built around ongoing education, practical ownership support, valuable resources, and a shared passion for life on the water. The goal is not only to help you buy the right boat, but to help you enjoy, understand, and care for it long after closing day.
What does the program cost?
You can get started with a low deposit — currently $1,000 $500 down for our Labor Day Weekend Sale. Your full tuition is tailored to your search and reviewed in full on your free, no-obligation discovery call, and flexible payment options are available through our secure payment processor.
Tuition is for the education and advisory work itself — it is not a brokerage commission or a share of any sale, and it is never paid by or split with a seller, broker, or dealer. You are our only client, and you make every decision.
Consider what it costs to get the wrong boat: a bad purchase can mean tens of thousands in surprise repairs, a vessel you can't sell without a loss, or years of ownership you never actually enjoy. The program is built to give you the skill to avoid that outcome — on this boat and every one after it.
Can I search for boats anywhere?
Yes — the program is available worldwide via video call. Any boat, any state, any country — wherever you want to search, Dustin can review listings and run virtual pre-purchase inspections on your candidates.
How many boats will I actually look at?
It varies by search — graduates have averaged 80+ boats reviewed before closing, with every serious candidate getting a full virtual pre-purchase inspection at no extra cost.
What if I already have a boat I'm considering?
That's fine — the program can start with reviewing and inspecting a specific boat you've found, then expand into the full search process if that one doesn't pan out.
What happens once I close on the boat?
The Boat Buyer Education Program concludes at closing. As a graduate, you'll have the chance to apply for the Vessel Orientation Program next, so you learn your new boat system by system and step into ownership with confidence.
